Oktoberfest is once again coming to Munich this September. The festival will kick off from noon on 22 September 2018 and will run all the way into October. Get there early
I attended the opening weekend of Oktoberfest and this is probably the most important piece of advice we got given. Get there early. Doors to tents open between 9am and 10am, and for the opening weekend we got in the queue at 6am. And still had to run and rush for a table. If you’re planning a lie in, you will have to queue for the tents for a long time. For the more popular tents also be prepared that you may not get in if you don’t get there early. If the capacity is full and no-one leaves, you’re not getting in.
Tip the server
If you want to get in your servers good books and get served quickly and regularly, I’d suggest tipping the server. If there’s a group of you a few Euros each here and there isn’t going to hurt. It’ll ensure that your server comes back to your table often, meaning you don’t have to wait a long time between each stein. We tipped our server around twenty Euros for the first order and got our drinks delivered right as the very first keg of festival was opened. Even the locals were impressed!
Book Accommodation Early
For the duration of the festival (and especially the first weekend) Munich is crawling with festival goers. Meaning that budget accommodation could be pretty hard to come by if you haven’t booked in advance. We suggest sorting your tickets and accommodation ahead of time, to avoid forking out a lot of cash for a room. Look the Part!
It’s not an absolutely necessary part of Oktoberfest, but looking the part for it will help you get into the festive mood! You can choose from Lederhosen or Dirndls. Think bodices over puffy white blouses and full skirt, or knee breeches with checkered shirt and suspenders. Women typically opt for Dirndls, whilst the men go for Lederhosen’s, but if you want to mix it up a bit that’s great to do too. Either get your costume before you leave or grab it at one of the many costume stalls that pop up all over Munich.
Be Prepared to Queue
A boring, yet absolutely necessary tip to give. Oktoberfest gets busy. And some days more than others (I’m looking at you opening weekend). So you will have to line up. Whether it’s to gain entry to a different tent, to the toilets or to the many fairground rides at the festival. And speaking of toilets women I’ve got another tip for you. The lines for the women’s toilets are crazy. Think sometimes an hour long line. So if you think you need to go, however much, get in the line. Don’t delay it as you may find yourself in the queue for a long time, not feeling super comfortable.
